Job Title: Communication and Advocacy Officer

Reports to: Head of Programs

Responsible for: Communication and Marketing Assistant

Directorate: Programs

Critical working relationships with all staff

Job Role: The Communication and Advocacy Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing strategic communication and advocacy initiatives that promote the mission, vision, and activities of Faraja Africa Foundation and its enterprise. The role will ensure visibility, public engagement, and effective messaging to influence policy, mobilize support, and expand the organization’s impact.

Person Specifications

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Mass Communications, Journalism and Media, Public Relations, Digital Media and Strategic Communications, or any other related field

Experience:

  • At least three years of proven experience in a communication, advocacy or public affairs in preferably an NGO or social enterprise space.
  • Experience in Videography, photography and editorial skills.

Skills, Abilities, and Competencies:

  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills (English and at least one local language).
  • Proven experience in digital communications and social media management.
  • Experience in campaign strategy, media engagement, and policy advocacy is an added advantage.
  • Graphic design, photography, or video production skills are a plus.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills with knowledge of both internal and external communications environments.
  • Commitment to staying abreast of communications and storytelling trends within the nonprofit industry and applying best practices and new ideas to our communications work.
  • You have a good understanding of print and production processes, etc.
  • Potential and flexibility of attitude to learn and take on new tasks.
  • You have the ability to demonstrate sensitivity to cultural differences and gender issues, as well as the commitment to equal opportunities.
  • You have ability to demonstrate an openness and willingness to learn about the application of gender/gender mainstreaming, youth’s rights, and diversity for all aspects of development work.
  • Commitment to FAF’s safeguarding policies to ensure all people who come into contact with FAF are as safe as possible.
Key Result Areas Duties and Responsibilities
Communication Strategy and Content Development • Develop and implement annual communication plans aligned with programmatic and enterprise objectives.
• Create and curate engaging content (articles, blogs, newsletters, social media posts, multimedia) for FAF.
• Maintain and update the organization’s website and digital platforms.
Brand and Media Management • Ensure brand consistency across all communication materials.
• Cultivate relationships with media houses, journalists, and influencers.
• Draft and distribute press releases, media kits, and statements as needed.
• Organize media briefings, interviews, and press conferences
• Maintain and update the organization’s website regularly.
• Ensure timely updates of shared digital assets.
• Create compelling content for social media, increasing audience engagement and reach.
Advocacy and Campaign Coordinator • Design and implement advocacy strategies to influence youth-focused policies at the national level.
• Work with program teams to support youth-led campaigns on governance, economic empowerment, and civic engagement
• Monitor, maintain, and update media lists and databases
• Assist with media engagement and liaison efforts.
• Facilitate partnerships with CSOs, Networks, and relevant stakeholders to amplify advocacy initiative.
Documentation, reporting and learning ·• Develop project summaries for all new initiatives.
• Collect and document success stories, testimonials, and best practices.
• Contribute to monthly newsletters and knowledge-sharing materials
• Capture high-quality photography and short videos for events and field visits.
• Support the development of communications products and materials, including IEC materials, publications, etc.
• Assist with logistics related to communications for campaigns, launches, and workshops.

Professional qualifications

  • Degree in Mass Communications, Journalism and Media, Public Relations, Digital Media and Strategic Communications, or any other related field

Experience

  • At least three years of proven experience in a communication, advocacy or public affairs in preferably an NGO or social enterprise space.
